The Massachusetts National Guard will celebrate its 385th birthday during a ceremony held at the Salem Visitor Center on Dec. 13, 2021. A museum exhibit unveiling highlighting its storied history, titled “The Nation’s First: A History of the Massachusetts National Guard,” will be among the events planned for the occasion. This significant milestone honors the Guard's long-standing tradition of service and sacrifice throughout American history.
The exhibit features artifacts, photographs, and videos detailing the National Guard’s history from its inception to the present day. The Massachusetts National Guard partnered with the National Park Service to plan, produce, and display the exhibit, which will be open for public viewing beginning on December 15 at the Salem Maritime National Historic Site Visitor Center. The historical significance of Salem as the location of the original militia regiments’ muster in the spring of 1637 makes it the perfect setting. The city is federally recognized as the “Birthplace of the National Guard.”
“We’re honored for the opportunity to share the history of the Massachusetts National Guard with an exhibit in Salem,” said Maj. Gen. Gary W. Keefe, The Adjutant General of the Massachusetts National Guard. “The collaboration with the National Park Service has been instrumental in the creation of a truly unique account of our men and women’s service and sacrifice to the Commonwealth and the Nation.”
The National Guard holds the distinction of being the oldest military force in the Department of Defense. The first militia regiments in North America were organized in Massachusetts. The 101st Engineer Battalion, 101st Field Artillery Regiment, 181st Infantry Regiment, and 182nd Infantry Regiment trace their origins to the North, South, and East Regiments, established by a legislative act of the Massachusetts Bay General Court on December 13, 1636. This date is officially recognized as the birthday of the National Guard. Today, these historic regiments continue their legacy as the oldest units in the U.S. military.
Since its founding in 1636, the Massachusetts National Guard has played a vital role in every major conflict in American history. Its members have consistently stepped up to serve both at home and abroad, exemplifying a commitment to duty, honor, and country. More than 20,000 Massachusetts National Guard Soldiers and Airmen have deployed since September 11, 2001, supporting missions around the world while also responding to emergencies in their communities. Their dedication remains a source of pride and inspiration for the Commonwealth and the nation.
